Cranial osteopathic treatment is extremely beneficial to babies and children.
It is a common belief that babies and children have no structural stresses or strains in their body because they are ‘so young’. The reality is very different. The birth process can leave a baby with many different symptoms due to unresolved stresses and strains within the head and body. If these strains are unresolved into childhood further problems may also develop.
Babies can be treated safely, gently and effectively from 1-2 weeks old. The osteopath’s highly trained sense of touch can detect potential problems that may develop (eg colic which usually starts when the baby is around 2-3 weeks old).
Birth is one of the most stressful events in our life. The baby is subject to enormous forces, as the uterus pushes to expel the baby against the natural resistance of the birth canal. The baby squeezes through the bony pelvis, on it’s short but highly stimulating and potentially stressful journey. The baby’s head reduces in size as its soft bones overlap, bend and warp as the baby descends. This natural ability enables the absorption of the stresses in a normal delivery. However, if the labour has been difficult the baby’s ability to absorb these stresses may be overwhelmed, and it may be left with uncomfortable strains and compressions within its head and body.
Caesarean babies may also benefit from osteopathic treatment as they may be left with stresses and strains from an unusual lying position within the womb, a difficult birth, or the shock of a very quick delivery in the case of a planned section.
